One-day Introduction to Woodcarving Course

Discover the Art of Woodcarving – One-Day Course with William Barsley
Step into the timeless craft of woodcarving in this immersive one-day workshop, guided by award-winning carver William Barsley. Designed to be both relaxed and inspiring, the course offers the perfect introduction to an ancient artform — and you’ll be amazed at how much you can achieve in a single day.
Who is it for?
No previous carving experience is required. The day is thoughtfully structured to build your confidence and skills step by step, making it accessible to complete beginners as well as those with some creative background. Participants must be 18+ years.
What you’ll learn
We’ll start with an introduction to the tools, techniques, and traditions of the craft before moving on to practical exercises. The focus will be on shallow relief carving — a versatile and rewarding technique for creating decorative designs. By the end of the day, you’ll have the knowledge and confidence to continue carving independently at home, and your own carved piece to take away with you.
What’s included
- All timber and tools needed for the day
- A selection of design templates for inspiration
- Tea, coffee, and sweet treats to keep you energised
- The option to purchase additional timber blanks and carving tools at the end of the course
What to bring
Just your enthusiasm, an open mind, and a packed lunch. If the weather is kind, you’re welcome to enjoy lunch on the picnic tables outside the studio, or you can eat at your workbench. Alternatively, there is a café at the Cider Press Centre or a village shop nearby.
For safety reasons, please wear closed-toe shoes.
Additional information
- Group courses run with a minimum of four participants. If this number isn’t met, we’ll be in touch at least two weeks beforehand to offer alternative dates or a full refund. The maximum number of participants on a course would be eight.
